  • Ace your Job Interview

Did you turn down a job offer because they told you the interview will be in English? Really? Then let's start acquiring some language and confidence. Welcome to our series: Common Interview Questions. Each post will review one question. Question #10: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? This is the same question as: “What are your short- and long-term goals?” Tips for answering: Demonstrate that your career goals align with the job you’re applying for. Focus on the skills you want to learn and get better at. Don’t get too specific with job titles or time frames. Never say “I want your job,” “I don’t know” or “Not here!” Use words such as: develop, impact, contribute, grow into, learn more about, step out of my comfort zone, acquire experience/skills, challenge myself… Sample Answers “I see myself eventually developing into a leader in the [industry vertical] space. To get there, I hope to learn even more about [skills and experiences] along the way.” “I want to continue to deepen my [example] skills.” “I want to learn how to [skills] even better, so that I can make even more of an impact, including [impacts you wish to make].” “My favorite part of my job right now is [ways you’re contributing]. I hope to continue to do that, but I also hope to challenge myself to grow in new ways, including [examples].” “I’m interested in applying my passion of [broader themes of your skills] to help make a difference, especially with organizations that value [company’s value you align most with].”

Question #9: How would your boss/reports/peers describe you? This question is pretty much the same as “what are your strengths” the only difference is that it should be from the point of view from your boss or coworkers. Tip: think of the recent performance review and quote your boss – quote what he said. Use phrases such as: hard worker, pay attention to details, take initiative, trustworthy/loyal/reliable, deliver on time, come up with creative solutions, able to harness the team, good communicator/negotiator, able to break down a plan/vision into manageable tasks, pleasant to work with, support/help other members of the team, work will with other departments/functions in the organization. Sample Answer “Well, in my last performance review in September, my boss described me as someone who takes initiative. My position as a PR manager requires that I keep track of our clients’ brand reputation, and if something goes wrong, I should deal with it as fast as possible. It requires me to be very proactive because if I wait for my entire team to have a meeting each time there is an ad-hoc issue, it might already be too late. There were 4-5 different situations where I had to take charge and react to problems literally the moment they arose, whether it was during my work hours, or not.”

Question #7: How do you make decisions? Or, tell me about a time you had to make a difficult decision? How did you handle it and what did you decide? With these questions, hiring managers want to know that you’ve made good decisions in the past and are comfortable making tough decisions under pressure. Demonstrate this and make them feel confident that you’re able to make decisions. Prepare to explain how you organize and structure your decisions. The best answers will show that you’re calm and follow a logical system when making decisions. Use the S.T.A.R model (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to clearly structure your answer. Use phrases such as: challenging case, resolve the issue, complicated situation, find the best approach, reach an agreement, suggest a compromise, offer a win-win, pros & cons, weigh different options, risks, impact, consequences, outcome of the decision. Sample Answer Situation: one of our largest clients was having an issue with our latest software update and I had to decide between doing a fresh install on their system or trying to troubleshoot. Task: I looked at the pros & cons of a fresh install but that would come with downtime vs. finding a temp workaround that we would eventually have to fix. The client didn’t express a preference and told us that we should decide what’s best. Action: in order to make a good decision, and since I didn’t know this customer very well I spoke with the Account Manager and he told me that this client is typically risk-averse and doesn’t like uncertainty…I felt the best way to resolve the situation was to do a complete reinstall of the software, even though it meant downtime. I also spoke to our billing team to provide a special discount to help offset the lost revenue our software caused, which the company appreciated and thanked me for. To summarize, typically list out all available options and then weigh the pros and cons and expected outcomes of each. I then list who is impacted and how by what decision…I try to engage and ask all relevant parties…and then based on data and information I’ve collected, decide on the best course of action. Result: customer was happy with my decision and the way I communicated and coordinated with him the downtime. End off with: Would you like me to give another example? Or did that answer your question?

Question #6: Tell me about a time you failed With this question, the interviewer wants to find out if you’re able to learn from mistakes and bounce back when things don’t go your way. Employers want to see if you can own up to your mistakes, be accountable, and also learn and improve from the experience. Below are the most important do’s and don’ts to follow: Admit to a real failure Describe the situation and what went wrong Show that you take responsibility (rather than blaming others), and show you learned from it Ideally, talk about how you used that lesson to get a different outcome next time you were presented with a similar challenge (e.g. how you turned a past failure into a future success) Use phrases such as: challenging case, resolve the issue, complicated situation, find the best approach, reach an agreement, suggest a compromise, my lessons learned. Sample Answer Use the S.T.A.R model (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to respond in a clear structured manner. The situation was xxxx, and I was tasked with improving the customer journey/experience. In order to do so, I assembled a multidisciplinary team from Operations, Finance, Product, Sales and xxxx. We brainstormed different ideas and options…automated many parts of the process…and the end result was x%...
